Only five homes have been demolished in the proposed Eastmoreland historic district since the ENA filed the nomination in 2016. Only five. In the last five years. Is this what the hysteria is all about?
That’s just one house annually, out of 1279 homes within the HD boundaries. That's 0.00078 of all homes being removed each year.
In that time, 12 garages were also demolished (which a historic district would not prevent anyway) and one swimming pool was removed.
The addresses of the demolished homes were 7556 SE 29th Ave (2016), 7101 SE 36th Ave (2017), 7405 SE 34th Ave (2017), 6930 SE 35th Ave (2018) and 3612 SE Crystal Springs Blvd (2021). Six new homes have also been built in the area since 2016.
The ENA has said repeatedly that Eastmoreland is under assault from development and will lose its neighborhood charm and character. These facts show the real impact on the neighborhood is minimal.
The ENA is using the threat of development to stoke fear and anger, with the hope that they can use a historic district to thwart city zoning which may allow increased density, diversity and affordability.
